Policies for business improvement

SET YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER

Policies

Company policies are the key tool for setting out an organisation's desired way of working, and stimulating engagement with employees.  But policy instructions are often incoherent, wordy, and lacking the clarity that employees need.  They are written by different people at different times, with no consistent structure or purpose.

Policies must be carefully designed and drafted to be an effective tool.  Explaining clearly, in simple terms, what is expected and how it will be delivered.  At their best, policies are a plan of action.

The Value of Policies

  • They provide a framework for communicating to employees.  They provide an opportunity to think about communications and key underlying messages in a holistic way, that gets everyone on the same page.

  • They set out the agreed way to operate.  They clarify ‘best practice’ for everyone to follow and to ensure consistent approaches across the company.

  • They save you time and money.  Managing people takes time and resources.  You save yourself time and effort by having clear workplace policies to instruct your employees on everyday issues.

  • They provide management with the tools they need to manage employee behaviour.  If a staff member breaks the rules, and needs disciplined, there is clear basis for taking action.

  • Written policies help protect your company from potential legal action.  Indeed, it is impossible to meet some legal requirements without written policies and instructions to your employees.

  • They are an effective tool for monitoring activities in your company.  When properly constructed, they set expectations, responsibilities and require feedback on delivery.  They act as a clear agenda to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

  • Management use policies to make decisions and control key functions within the company (that would otherwise be more difficult).
